Wind and water have carved Utah's bedrock into monuments of stone that bear the marks of not only pre-Columbian, but prehistoric times. That such beauty and silent majesty could be nothing more than a single suspended moment in the rock's own inevitable downfall and return to the dust from which it was formed, is truly a thing of awe.
Many more images from Utah can be found in the Recent Work Gallery, from my 2023 residency at Capitol Reef National Park.
The image above was shot on the last night of my first trip to Utah, and the American Southwest, in 2018. I had planned on shooting the Milky Way, but clouds were in the forecast. I climbed into my sleeping bag, not sure whether the skies would cooperate. I awoke around 1:45 am, just before moonset, to mostly clear skies. I pulled on my boots as quickly as I could and grabbed my camera gear on the way out of the tent. It was a perfect end to the trip.
